An exceptional result in terms of agility, smoothness of operation, consumption figures and emissions has been achieved by the Mercedes-Benz engineers with the new-concept 4-cylinder diesel powerplant.
Technologies from the BlueEFFICIENCY package were taken for each model in order to achieve the greatest possible degree of environmental friendliness. Through the use of further improved common-rail injection systems with injection pressures of up to 2000 bar, high-precision piezo-injectors that enable a particularly rapid and precise metering of the injected fuel, as well as a new turbocharger concept, the E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY has a maximum torque of up to 500 Nm.
Newly-developed ceramic fast glowplugs improve the cold running characteristics, while two Lanchester balancer shafts enhance smoothness of operation, enabling the highest degree of ride comfort.
The E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY also meets the EU5 exhaust gas limits, and the standard particulate filter ensures further significant reductions in particulate emissions.
Economical, powerful and low in emissions: that’s the newly developed 4-cylinder petrol engine with direct injection in the 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY. This engine is impressive with the direct responsiveness and smoothness of operation at all engine speeds. The E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY has an engine output of 150 kW and maximum torque of 310.
The low consumption figures for this new engine is due in part to the relatively small displacement of 1.8 litres and turbocharger, as well as the improved CGI direct injection. By reducing the weight and therefore also the internal friction losses, the engine is particularly economical and meets the strict thresholds for consumption and emissions.
A new 225kW 3.5-litre V-6 combines numerous advances to deliver more torque over a wider range of rpm. Its rapid-multispark ignition fires up to four times per millisecond, while new high-pressure Direct Injection microscopically tunes the fuel spray, reducing emissions, fuel consumption and noise. A lightweight diecast-alloy block, quicker and more widely variable valve timing, reduced friction, and clever “on-demand” ancillary components like the alternator further boost efficiency.
The E 500 is the most powerful engine for the E-Class Cabriolet. The V8 engine has an output of 285 kW and develops a maximum torque rating of 530 Nm in the range between 2800 and 4800 rpm. Just 5.3 seconds are all this engine needs to accelerate the Cabriolet from 0 to 100 km/h – a peak value.
